LALA by Serban Ionescu: When Cabinets Become Characters

If you’ve ever wanted your furniture to have a little more personality, LALA might be exactly what you’re looking for. The new cabinet series by artist Serban Ionescu—presented by Case Studyo and R & Company—blends functional design with playful sculpture to deliver something totally unexpected.

LALA isn’t just storage—it’s storytelling. These handcrafted wooden cabinets feature mirrored eyes, hand-carved noses, and expressive silhouettes that feel alive. Pull on the nose, and the cabinet opens, revealing hidden shelving inside. It’s furniture that interacts back.

Currently, the series features two unique one-of-one pieces:

Oula
A vibrant orange-pink lacquered wood cabinet, standing at 138 cm tall, 38 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Edition 1/1.

Vira
Finished in blue lacquer, Vira is slightly larger at 140 cm tall, 55 cm wide, and 45 cm deep. Also a one-of-a-kind piece.

Both cabinets feel more like characters than objects. They don’t just sit in a room—they animate it. And that’s no accident. Ionescu is known for transforming functional objects into narrative forms, often blurring the line between sculpture and design.

LALA continues that tradition by inviting viewers to engage emotionally with everyday objects. It’s a cabinet that feels like a companion, filled with personality and purpose.

If you’re a design lover, art collector, or someone who appreciates expressive, conceptual pieces, this project is worth a deeper look.
